What is a Digital Wallet?
So what exactly is a digital wallet? A digital wallet, also sometimes referred to as an “e-wallet”, is a contactless form of payment which allows you to check out at a payment terminal using your smart phone. Simply link your debit card or credit card account to your digital wallet and you can quickly and safely pay for your purchase using your mobile phone, often without ever touching the terminal's PIN pad.
And you probably have your phone with you everywhere you go, but now you won't need any cash or cards which can be left at home. Forgot your cash and cards at home? No worries – you can pay with your digital wallet right there on your phone. Just look for the contactless symbol on the payment terminal at checkout and your digital wallet has you covered.
And it’s easy to use. Just have your phone unlocked and digital wallet app open, hold your phone near the payment terminal until it beeps or vibrates to register your payment, and you're good to go.
How to set-up a digital wallet
Now that I know what a digital wallet is, how do I get started? If you have an iPhone®, open wallet and tap the plus sign. Then simply follow the steps to add a Union Bank® debit and/ or credit card. For Android™ devices, install the Google Pay™ app from Google Play™ then add your Union Bank debit card and/or credit card. You're now ready to pay in stores, in apps, and online with your mobile phone everywhere you see the contactless symbol.
If you don’t have ID touch set up on your phone, your phone may require a PIN or security code to unlock it before you use the ID touch feature to pay.
Where can I make a contactless payment?
When you see the contactless symbol at checkout, you can simply tap to pay. Please note that some merchants may prompt for a PIN.
Is it safe to use a digital wallet?
Your personal information is not stored on the phone, it’s just the vehicle used to process the payment – a sort of digital handshake between the payment terminal, the digital wallet and your account. And if touching the payment terminal to enter a PIN makes you a bit nervous, know that when you use your digital wallet, you probably won't have to touch the payment terminal at all. So yes, your personal information is safe, but you’re also safe from touching too many things. And these days, that’s just as important as a peace of mind.
So what is a digital wallet? It’s a convenient, safe, no-contact way to check out at a payment terminal using your phone. Give it a try – even if it's your back-up method of payment. You just might make your life a little easier.
