ART SMITH NAMED CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER AT UNION BANK

San Francisco, June 16, 2010 -- UnionBanCal Corporation and its primary subsidiary, Union Bank, N.A., today announced that veteran marketing executive Arthur (Art) G. Smith has joined the company as Chief Marketing Officer. Smith, who will be based in Union Bank's corporate headquarters in San Francisco, will report to Vice Chairman and Chief Retail Banking Officer Timothy H. Wennes beginning June 15, 2010.
"Art has a proven track record of strategic leadership over his 25-year career, and we are pleased to have someone with his level of experience and expertise lead all marketing efforts as we continue to grow," said Wennes. "We are confident that Art will enhance our marketing efforts as we work to achieve our strategic goals of expansion and increasing our retail, commercial and wealth management businesses."
As the company's top marketing officer, Smith will have executive oversight of all retail, commercial and wealth management marketing activities. He will have overall responsibility for brand strategy and management, customer experience, integrated marketing communications, advertising, sponsorships, segment marketing, demand generation, online marketing, merchandising, and corporate events.
Prior to joining Union Bank, Smith was senior vice president and head of Global Brand Marketing at Wachovia Corporation. At Wachovia, he served as a key member of the executive team and was responsible for, brand strategy and management, integrated marketing communications, advertising, sports marketing and strategic alliances.
Before joining Wachovia, Smith was chief marketing officer at RSM McGladrey (a division of H&R Block), overseeing all aspects of marketing, including brand strategy, brand management and business development activities. Prior to RSM McGladrey, Smith co-founded and was managing partner of Coombs-Smith, LLC, a branding, marketing services and management consulting firm. Coombs-Smith provided consumer marketing support for a mix of Fortune 500 and private equity-backed start-up companies. His career also includes work at Duke Energy Corporation and 17 years with Xerox Corporation.
Smith earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Nazareth College in Rochester, New York.
