Recent activities include recognition of LGBT ‘Local Heroes’ and
grant to San Diego LGBT Community Center

SAN DIEGO (January 19, 2012) – As part of its ongoing commitment to cultural diversity and responsible banking, Union Bank recently announced several initiatives to bolster its support of San Diego’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Initiatives ranged from providing financial support to important LGBT community organizations and volunteering to honoring local heroes in San Diego’s LGBT community.

Most recently, the Union Bank Foundation granted $5,000 to The San Diego LGBT Community Center to support its Sunburst Youth Housing Project (YHP), which provides safe and supportive housing for San Diego’s homeless youth, including LGBT and HIV-positive youth. In 2011, Union Bank was also the name sponsor of “Center Stage,” a music and comedy showcase and fundraiser organized by The Center’s Young Professionals Council.

During the last year, Union Bank also enhanced its support of the Greater San Diego Business Association (GSDBA), the area’s gay and lesbian chamber of commerce, by providing funding as well as leadership and event support. Additionally, Union Bank funded several other organizations that provide important services to members of San Diego’s LGBT community including: Townspeople, offering supportive and affordable housing to low-income people living with HIV/AIDS and other special needs; Mama’s Kitchen, a volunteer-driven nonprofit that prepares and delivers food to people affected by AIDS and cancer; San Diego Pride; and AIDS Walk & Run San Diego.

Much of Union Bank’s direct involvement with San Diego’s LGBT community is spearheaded by UB PROUD, the bank’s employee resource group for LGBT employees and allies. UB PROUD helps to bridge and strengthen ties among colleagues, senior management, clients and the larger community.

“We’re very honored to support San Diego’s LGBT community and are pleased with the role that our employees play to drive these initiatives,” said Union Bank Senior Vice President and Regional Executive Lawrence Henry, who oversees the San Diego, Coachella Valley and Riverside County regions. “The diverse and vital LGBT community in San Diego is an important part of our family at Union Bank and we welcome the opportunity to give back to this community.”

Additionally, Union Bank has also partnered with public television station KPBS to honor 16 extraordinary individuals from diverse communities throughout San Diego as local heroes. During 2011 for the first time, the awards, which recognize the recipients’ leadership and contributions in shaping the neighborhoods in which they work and live, included honorees from the LGBT community. 2011 LGBT honorees Delores A. Jacobs and Nicole Murray Ramirez will join other honorees during a celebratory event February 8, 2012.
