Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA – The Carmel Bach Festival (CBF) announces that Union Bank will be the designated Season Sponsor for the 2013 Festival. The Festival, held from July 13- 27, with pre-Festival events July 6 – 12, is celebrating its 76th season. Led by Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Paul Goodwin, this year focuses on a French theme which explores Bach’s influence on French music and also early French composers. Concerts are held at the Sunset Center in Carmel, as well as venues in Pebble Beach, Monterey, and the Carmel Mission Basilica.
Debbie Chinn, Executive Director of the Festival, said “It’s an honor to welcome Union Bank to our Carmel Bach Festival family. Their passionate championship of the arts, community partnerships, and lifelong learning programs is a natural fit as we work to broaden access to our performances during the summer and develop programs to deepen our engagement in the communities that we serve. Their investment in our growth is tremendously invaluable.”
Sandi Eason, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Union Bank, said “We are delighted to be the season sponsor for the Carmel Bach Festival, which is America's most important Bach festival. This family event brings the entire community together during the summer and it’s a tremendous opportunity for the Central Coast to shine.” Eason will join Union Bank Carmel Branch Manager Robert Pappani and other local team members in July for festival activities.
Musical highlights of the Festival include an opening night concert that features works by J.S. Bach, George Frederic Handel, Gabriel Fauré’s glorious Requiem and a commissioned piece by Thea Musgrave. Musgrave, an 84-year old female Scottish composer, has written both opera and classical music and was a student of Nadia Boulanger and Aaron Copland. Wednesday evening concerts, once again at the magnificent Carmel Mission Basilica, currently celebrating the 300th Anniversary of founder Junipero Serra. Pianist Stephen Prutsman joined by members of the Bach Festival orchestra for a Jazz crossover concert on Thursday evenings – back by popular demand. Prutsman will also present a lecture on the effects of music on the brain, and the importance of music in healing conditions such as autism, Alzheimer’s and PTSD. A celebration of David Gordon, our beloved dramaturge, in his 25th season with Carmel Bach Festival. Gordon, a noted Bach historian, is also the author of an upcoming biography of the festival’s founders, Dene Denny and Hazel Watrous.
