Breath of Life Award
Union Bank's commitment to the environment was recognized on April 8, 2010, with a major honor bestowed upon the company. Then-President and CEO Masa Tanaka accepted Breathe L.A.'s top honor -- the Breath of Life Award -- presented annually to innovators and inspiring individuals who promote clean air and pulmonary health in Los Angeles County.
The award recognizes the bank's commitment, under Tanaka's leadership, to environmental responsibility in all aspects of our culture and operations -- typified by the goal of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 9 percent by 2013 from 2008 levels. The honor also rewards the bank's strong support of Breathe L.A., which educates its stakeholders about the risks posed by poor air quality and lung ailments and provides ways to improve the quality of life for those affected.
"Taking care of the environment must be both a personal priority and a corporate responsibility," said Tanaka. "For Union Bank, the responsibility for preserving and improving the environment is one of our most important priorities. That is why I am so proud to accept the Breath of Life Award on behalf of the thousands of employees who help us keep our focus on this crucial responsibility each and every day."
Historical trends are slowly but surely changing, and Los Angeles children are no longer kept inside during smog alerts. California leads the nation in environmental policies and air quality regulations designed to keep the economy growing while improving the quality of life in our communities. Union Bank is at the center of support for both efforts.
