Jewish Heritage Month


As part of Union Bank's Heritage Month celebrations, we are proud to sponsor the Local Heroes Awards and to honor various individuals for their positive contributions and influence they have made to the Jewish American community.

The honorees will be formally recognized as part of the Annual Local Heroes Awards, which Union Bank partners with public television station KCET. The station broadcasts video profiles of the honorees throughout its Jewish American Heritage Month programming.

Congratulations to our 2011 Local Heroes of the Year:

Zane Buzby is a successful actor, television director, producer, and full-time humanitarian. She has acted in numerous films, including "Oh God" and "This Is Spinal Tap," and has produced and directed television series and pilots for major studios. Her most passionate role is serving as president and founder of The Survivor Mitzvah Project, a nonprofit that helps more than 1,000 Holocaust survivors in seven countries. Ms. Buzby uses her directorial skills and story-telling abilities to film the stories of these survivors, creating an archive for posterity and educational purposes and to urge people to participate in this humanitarian effort.  Through her work, Ms. Buzby helps the elderly and forgotten Holocaust survivors live their final years in comfort and dignity, with friendship and hope.

Stephen J. Sass has been the president of the Jewish Historical Society (JHS) of Southern California since 1989. He is a dedicated volunteer focused on preserving the history and supporting the initiatives of Southern California's Jewish community. He has supported the community through his efforts as a community historian, editor of Jewish Los Angeles, chairman of the Fairfax Community Mural Project, and producer and cowriter of a JHS award-winning documentary about East L.A.'s Jewish heritage. Mr. Sass has also served as a board member of the Jewish Federation, the Jewish Federation-Valley Alliance, the Jewish Community Relations Committee, and The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles.

In 1944 at the age of 16, Edith Eva Eger, Ph.D., was sent to Auschwitz along with her family. Through determination, Dr. Eger survived the imprisonment but lost her family. After World War II, she moved to Czechoslovakia and eventually to the United States to pursue a medical career. Dr. Eger has always found ways to use her personal experiences to inspire, educate, and help others. She is a prolific author, lecturer, and member of several associations and has appeared on numerous television programs and documentaries. Dr. Eger has a clinical practice in La Jolla, California, where she uses her past as a powerful analogy to inspire people to reach their potential and shape their destinies.

Jackie Gmach
is the community outreach coordinator for San Diego State University's Initiative for Moral Courage (IMC). The new interdisciplinary think tank focuses on the critical study, promotion, and recognition of moral courage through a mentoring project that brings together academics, world leaders, and students. During Ms. Gmach's 20-year tenure at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center and the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture, she developed the San Diego Jewish Book Fair, the Music Festival, and two national exhibits: "Inside Anne Frank's House" and "DAVKA, The Survival of a People." She is involved in numerous community organizations, including American Friends of Magen David Adom and the Agency for Jewish Education, where she serves as the 2011 volunteer chair of Yom Limmud, a day of Jewish learning that attracts nearly 1,000 people.
