SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 23, 2016) – Union Bank today announced that its San Clemente branch has received recognition as a Top Energy Saver Bank Branch in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2015 ENERGY STAR® National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings, a contest that represents excellence in energy performance.*

Eight additional Union Bank branches in California have been recognized by the EPA for exceeding the Agency's 20 percent energy savings goal — as measured by their energy use in 2015 compared to 2014. These banking branches are the Camden Park Branch in San Jose, San Ramon Branch, West Fresno Branch, Bayside Branch in Newport Beach, Del Mar Branch, Burlingame Branch, Palmdale Branch, and Lakewood Branch. Union Bank is the only bank in the nation to have nine branches receive this recognition, and the only bank in California.*

With the goals of saving energy and combatting climate change, the competition was staged among commercial and public-sector buildings. In partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s ENERGY STAR program, participants measured, tracked, and reported their monthly energy consumption using Portfolio Manager®, EPA's online energy management tool. The branches receiving this recognition reduced energy use by an average of approximately 26 percent.

"Participating in the Energy Star Battle of the Buildings competition reflects our commitment to being an environmentally sustainable organization, and is just one of the many green initiatives Union Bank supports in an effort to build healthy, sustainable communities," said Vice President and Environmental Specialist of the Union Bank Environmental Stewardship Department Kim Luu. "As we continue to raise the bar on energy efficiency and carbon reduction in our buildings, Energy Star programs such as these are essential in measuring our progress and raising environmental awareness."

"We are honored to be recognized by the EPA for our leadership in environmental responsibility and are proud of the enthusiasm and commitment of our teams across our entire organization," said Union Bank Head of Retail Banking and Enterprise Marketing for the Americas, Pierre P. Habis. "We believe that caring for our environment is not only an important civic responsibility but essential to how we do business."

Union Bank's entry in the EPA's annual contest was spearheaded by the Environmental Stewardship Department in partnership with Corporate Real Estate and Retail Banking.

About ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 65 different kinds of products, 1.4 million new homes, and 20,000 commercial buildings and industrial plants that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. Over the past twenty years, American families and businesses have saved more than $230 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions with help from ENERGY STAR.

The 2015 ENERGY STAR National Building Competition measured energy performance over the entire 2015 calendar year. Competitors tracked their building's monthly energy consumption using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®, EPA's online energy and water measurement and tracking tool. Team Texas A&M ESCO Project won the competition by demonstrating the largest percentage reduction in energy use, adjusted for weather. The energy use reductions for each top finisher were verified by an independently licensed professional engineer or registered architect at the conclusion of the competition.
